In the New York twilight club-world in 1981,
hardly an hour would pass without hearing the
sonic seduction of the new YELLO 'Bostich'
remix. The track was the studio debut from
Leeds-born producer IAN TREGONING.
In collaboration with the band, it was a
dynamic pairing, resulting in many
of Yello's earlier classics, including
'Oh Yeah', 'Rhythm Divine’ and the
‘Stella’ and ‘One Second’.
After 7 years in Zurich, he started working at
North London’s Warriors Dance studio where
he met the rebel DJ Kid Batchelor. Together they
produced ROBERT OWENS, BANG THE PARTY,
NO SMOKE and the LAND OF PLENTY project–
a surreal sampler of electro, rare funk,
The Beatles and the Chinese State Choir.
As producer, engineer and remixer, he’s worked
with an international cast : ORBITAL,
FELA KUTI, YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA,
JOE STRUMMER, UNDERWORLD, REPUBLICA,
PROPAGANDA, BILLY MACKENZIE and
LAYO & BUSHWACKA!
In ‘93, he formed INKY BLACKNUSS with Alex
Knight and Andrea Parker and
released two dark and dirty 12s on Andrew
Weatherall’s Sabrettes label.
In ‘95, he produced the STRANGER project
releasing the 'Volcano' and 'Partly Cloudy'
ep’s for the esteemed Plink-Plonk label.
This culminated in the double-album
'Rolling Thunder' and featured contributions from
Karl Hyde, Dieter Meier and Derrick Carter.
Described by DJ magazine as "an intriguing
album of electronica, dense
soundscapes and an abounding sense of
malevolence set over travelling rhythms”.
Since then, he’s moved onto writing for
TV/Film, about 120 titles for the Extreme
Music Library in LA. His menacing ambience
is used in TOP GEAR, SATC and the first
TRANSFORMERS blockbuster. He’s recently
teamed up with Jaki Liebezeit, the
powerhouse drummer from CAN and released
the MAGNETIK NORTH album ‘Evolver’.
Live dates are planned sometime.
Ian’s first instrument was the trumpet and he
read Physics at the University of Salford.
